AUSTRALIA’S ANIMAL HEALTH STATUS
Australia’s BSE free status has been internationally recognized with the European Scientific Steering Committee's highest category (Category One) of BSE-freedom.
Australia and New Zealand are two of only a few countries with an EU Category One listing sharing this BSE disease-free status with others such as Singapore, Iceland, Namibia and Vanuatu. Australia is also free of List A diseases as defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
It is also free of the wasting diseases scrapie in sheep and chronic wasting disease amongst indigenous wild animal herds. The US recognizes only two countries in the world as free of scrapie - Australia and New Zealand.
